Choral Conductor

As a conductor, Michael has over a decade’s experience with Choral societies and chamber choirs, including being music director of three choral societies and two chamber choirs, as well as conducting yearly residential courses for chamber and youth choirs since 2010, and being chorus master for a chorus/orchestral society for four years too.

He is currently Music Director of Godalming Choral Society, where he has worked since 2007. Performances have included Verdi’s Requiem (standing ovation) and sell-out performances of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and Mozart’s Requiem at the prestigious Charterhouse School, Godalming.

Guest/Deputy Conductor

Michael is an experienced and reliable guest conductor. He can provide the following skills:

  • fitting the rehearsal into an overall plan as given by the permanent conductor/MD
  • Sticking to the “shopping list” given by the MD!
  • Quickly building rapport and breaking the ice with a new group
  • Leading rehearsals so as to give the choir the feeling of real progress – as well as enjoyment and fun
  • Deftly  improving the choir’s sound with quick fixes
  • Working with the MD’s breath and phrasing marks – not against them!

Music Director

As Music Director, Michael has a great deal of experience in the following crucial areas:

  • Leading rehearsals so as to give the choir the feeling of real progress – as well as enjoyment and fun
  • Planning concert repertoire (in conjunction with committees) that is enjoyable to sing, the right level (not too challenging or easy) and easy to sell to the public, while being imaginative
  • Working closely with a committee in managing the choir
  • Liaising efficiently with vocal score librarian, orchestral librarian, publicity teams, treasurer , chair of trustees, etc.
  • Budget planning (including experience with spreadsheets -Michael always comes in on budget)
  • Fixing excellent but cost-effective players or engaging and liaising with excellent fixers
  • Engaging excellent but affordable up-and-coming and established vocal soloists.
